Woof! Let's go!

CS2 server plugins run on Metamod:Source plus CounterStrikeSharp, not SourceMod, which has no CS2 build. Install a Metamod 2.0 dev build into game/csgo, add one line to gameinfo.gi, then extract CounterStrikeSharp on top. Plugins are written in C# and each one gets its own folder. Verify every step from the console before moving on.
This is the most common piece of outdated advice in CS2 server hosting. Guides written for CS:GO get "2026" added to the title and still tell people to install SourceMod, which then does nothing, and the reader assumes they did something wrong. They did not. The stack changed. This guide covers what runs plugins on CS2 today, the right install order, and the 2026 changes that catch people out.
gameinfo.gi.gameinfo.gi and update CounterStrikeSharp after a big patch.No. SourceMod served the Source engine for well over a decade and still runs Team Fortress 2 and other Source 1 games. CS2 moved to Source 2, and the internals SourceMod depends on are not there in the same shape. AlliedModders has not shipped a CS2 build, so treat any CS2 guide that opens with "install SourceMod" as written for the previous game.
The community built a different stack instead, and it is mature: admin tools, retakes, practice mode and match plugins all exist for it.
Metamod:Source is the foundation. It hooks into the Source 2 engine and gives other code somewhere to attach. CS2 needs the 2.0 branch, which is published as dev builds rather than a stable release. On its own it does very little you would notice as an admin, but nothing else loads without it.
CounterStrikeSharp is a Metamod plugin that hosts plugins written in C# on .NET. That is a big change from SourcePawn: the language is mainstream, the tooling is ordinary .NET tooling, and far more developers can write for it.
Two 2026 changes matter if you are following an older guide:
The order is not optional. CounterStrikeSharp is a Metamod plugin, so it does nothing without Metamod in place. The CS2 game folder kept its old name, so everything below lives under game/csgo.
1. Install Metamod:Source. Download the latest Linux 2.0 dev build from metamodsource.net. The archive contains an addons folder: extract it into game/csgo so that game/csgo/addons/metamod exists. On BruceNode, upload the archive in the Files tab and extract it there, or use SFTP.
2. Register Metamod in gameinfo.gi. Open game/csgo/gameinfo.gi in the Files tab, find the line that starts with Game_LowViolence csgo_lv, and add this on the line directly under it:
Game csgo/addons/metamod
Metamod has to sit above the other Game entries in the search paths. A missing or misplaced line is the most common reason a correct install does nothing at all.
3. Restart and verify. Restart from the Console tab and run meta version. If Metamod is loaded, it prints its version. If the command is not recognised, step 2 did not take, and there is no point continuing until it does.
4. Install CounterStrikeSharp. From the CounterStrikeSharp GitHub releases, take the with-runtime Linux build the first time, since it includes the .NET runtime. Extract its addons folder into game/csgo as well, which adds game/csgo/addons/counterstrikesharp.
5. Restart and verify again. meta list should now show CounterStrikeSharp, and css_plugins list reports what it has loaded. An empty list is fine at this point. It means the runtime is up with no plugins yet.
6. Add plugins. Each plugin goes in its own folder under game/csgo/addons/counterstrikesharp/plugins, for example plugins/MyPlugin/MyPlugin.dll. Many plugin downloads are already laid out to drop straight into addons/counterstrikesharp. Restart, or run css_plugins load MyPlugin. Replacing a plugin's .dll later hot reloads it by default.
Verifying at steps 3 and 5, rather than at the end, is what turns a confusing failure into a two-minute fix.
If plugins vanish after a Valve patch, it is almost always one of two things.
gameinfo.gi was replaced. When a CS2 update changes gameinfo.gi, Steam overwrites the file and your Metamod line is gone, so meta version stops responding. Add the line back as in step 2 and restart. On BruceNode the server checks Steam for CS2 updates every time it restarts, so this is the first place to look after a big patch.
CounterStrikeSharp needs a matching release. CounterStrikeSharp relies on game signatures that Valve updates can move, and its releases ship fixes for specific CS2 versions. Update by extracting the newer release over the old one; your config files are not overwritten. The smaller build without the runtime is fine for updates, unless the .NET version changed since your last install, as it did in May 2026.
No. CS2 servers run at a fixed 64 tick with Valve's sub-tick system on top, and the old -tickrate 128 launch option does nothing. Sub-tick records the exact moment of every shot and movement between ticks, which is what 128 tick used to approximate, so a 64 tick CS2 server is not the downgrade it would have been in CS:GO. Our CS2 server hosting guide covers tick rate in more depth.
Rate settings copied from old CS:GO configs mostly target the old tick system, so check any cvar against current CS2 documentation before relying on it. A stable server, a good map pool and a clean plugin set matter far more.
If you are carrying a CS:GO community server over, the plugins do not come with it. SourcePawn plugins cannot run on CounterStrikeSharp, and there is no shim.
You have two options: find a CounterStrikeSharp equivalent or port the logic to C# yourself. Check for an existing plugin first, because the common needs are covered and most live on GitHub: CS2-SimpleAdmin for admin commands, cs2-retakes for retakes, and MatchZy for practice mode, scrims and matches.
Every CS2 plan comes with 85 GB of NVMe storage, enough for the roughly 70 GB of game files plus maps, demos and plugins. The first install pulls all of that from Steam and usually takes 10 to 40 minutes, so if the panel shows "installing", that is the download running. We explain it in why a CS2 server sits on installing.
At checkout you add your Steam Game Server Login Token and an RCON password, and the GOTV port is assigned automatically. Map, game mode and max players live in the Startup tab, and server.cfg goes in game/csgo/cfg. Plans run from Practice (1 GB, $3/mo) to Tournament (8 GB, $20/mo), with Competitive (4 GB, $10/mo) the popular pick, all from our Canada location with DDoS protection. Rather skip the install? Add the one-time Metamod + CounterStrikeSharp setup ($20) at checkout and our team installs both with essential plugins configured.
Start a CS2 server on BruceNode and use code BRUCE20 for 20% off your first month. Your plugin server can be ready for tonight's scrim.
In game/csgo/addons/counterstrikesharp/plugins, one folder per plugin. Metamod itself lives in game/csgo/addons/metamod.
Usually the update replaced gameinfo.gi and removed the Metamod line, or CounterStrikeSharp needs its release for the new CS2 version. Re-add the line, update CounterStrikeSharp, and restart.
A Metamod:Source 2.0 dev build. Since CounterStrikeSharp v1.0.375, its install guide asks for build 1467 or newer.
Not directly, since SourcePawn does not run on CounterStrikeSharp. Many favourites, like retakes, already have CounterStrikeSharp versions, so your old setup is often one download away.
