Woof! Let's go!

The best Halloween Minecraft server ideas are events your players can jump into the moment they log on: a pumpkin hunt, a haunted maze, a boss night, a candy market and a build contest. Here is how to run each one, the plugins, datapacks, modpacks and maps worth installing, and how much RAM each setup needs.
Every project below was checked on Modrinth or CurseForge in October 2026, with the newest Minecraft version it supports. Confirm yours on the project page before you install.
| Setup | Server software | Players need | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plugins | Paper or Purpur | Nothing, a normal client | Public servers, big friend groups, timed events |
| Datapacks | Vanilla, Paper or modded | Nothing (some add a resource pack) | Adding a boss or a build tool to an existing world |
| Modpack | Fabric or NeoForge | The same modpack in their launcher | A full horror survival run |
Not sure? Start with plugins. You keep your world, everyone joins on a normal client, and you can switch the whole thing off when the season ends.
Hide pumpkins around spawn and reward whoever finds them all. HolidayHunt (Paper, Spigot and Folia, up to 1.21.11) is the simplest way: set holidayMode: HALLOWEEN and totalCollectibles in its config, run /holidayhunt to get a collectible to place, and put your prize in rewardCommands. On 26.x, Halloween & Geocaching (Paper, Spigot and Purpur, up to 26.3) does the same with a stats GUI (/egghunt gui) and optional random drops that announce a new pumpkin somewhere in the world.
Hide most of them in plain sight and one somewhere evil. The last pumpkin is the one everyone talks about in Discord.
Build a maze, keep it dark, and let your staff hand out the scares. Use WorldEdit to wall it in fast (//wand to select, //set to fill), then protect it with WorldGuard so nobody digs through the walls:
/rg define maze
/rg flag maze block-break deny
/rg flag maze block-place deny
/rg flag maze greeting-title Enter if you dare
Then add Halloween Plugin (Paper, Spigot and Purpur, 1.21.3 up to 26.3). Its /halloween trigger <event> <player> command fires any of its scares on demand, like a carved pumpkin landing on someone's head or a sudden flash of darkness, so a staff member waiting at the last corner can time it perfectly. Players who would rather skip the jump scares can opt out with /halloween disable.
A timed fight is the easiest event to run: announce a start time, gather everyone at spawn, go.
/halloween top <stat> shows the leaderboard./spookyraid target set, launch with /spookyraid start, and bring out the Headless Horseman with /spooky spawn boss.Vanilla joins in too. On October 31, zombies, skeletons and their cousins have about a one in four chance to spawn wearing a carved pumpkin or jack o'lantern, and the pumpkins never drop. First player to screenshot five pumpkin-headed mobs wins.
Give players a currency and somewhere to spend it. Halloween Plugin drops Halloween Candy from its mobs, bosses and graves, and turns any villager into a Pumpkin Trader with trades you define, like golden apples or emeralds for a pocket of candy. SpookySeason adds trick-or-treating: players right-click doors and villagers for a treat or a nasty surprise, with cooldowns so nobody farms it, plus a treat leaderboard and rewards for the top collectors when the season wraps up.
Run it as a market night: one hour of hunting, then everyone meets at spawn to trade.
Give everyone a plot, a theme (haunted house, witch hut, graveyard) and two hours, then judge together. Protect each plot with its own WorldGuard region. For a twist, add the Pumpkin Carving datapack (26.3, with an older release for 1.21.6 to 1.21.8): right-click a pumpkin with a sword to carve it voxel by voxel, use an axe for bigger cuts, and fill mistakes back in with pumpkin seeds. Finished pumpkins can be picked up and even worn. It needs its companion resource pack, listed under Files on the version page, which you can send to players as a server resource pack (see below).
A ready-made map is the quickest event of all. Halloween Parkour (CurseForge, up to 26.3) is a giant spiral course with checkpoints, and its author allows small servers of up to 20 players to use it with credit to the download page. Forgotten Manor (CurseForge, up to 1.21.11) is a haunted swamp mansion built as a survival base, with an attic, an enchanting room and a village nearby, a great start for a spooky season SMP.
Plugins need Paper or Purpur. Install them, restart, then edit plugins/<PluginName>/config.yml in the Files tab. Two settings worth knowing:
season.enabled: true and it switches on October 1 and off November 5. /halloween off pauses everything.enabledWorlds, and its docs say to size maxAlive and the target health to your player count before a real event.Stop the server, open the Files tab, go to world/datapacks and upload the .zip. Start the server and run /datapack list to check it loaded. Datapacks are picky about versions, so if a pack lists 26.2 and your server runs 26.3, check its page for an update first.
Two atmosphere packs worth a look:
/locate structure qrafty:transilvania. Like every worldgen pack, it only builds in chunks that have not been generated yet, so add it before you explore new land.Stop the server, upload the map's .zip in the Files tab and use Unarchive. To make it your main world, rename your current world folder so you can switch back, then rename the map folder to world. To run it next to your survival world instead, install Multiverse-Core and import it by its folder name:
/mv import halloween_parkour normal
/mv tp halloween_parkour
Run a map on the version it lists or newer. Minecraft can upgrade an older world, never downgrade one.
Default-Style Halloween Pack (26.1 up to 26.3) keeps the vanilla look and adds autumn leaves, Halloween food and candy dyes, a spooky GUI and mobs dressed in costumes. The costumes look best when players also run the Entity Model Features and Entity Texture Features mods, as the author recommends. Our server resource pack guide shows how to send it to everyone who joins.
Many of the biggest horror packs still sit on Minecraft 1.20.1. These three run on newer versions and install from Modrinth:
| Modpack | Loader and version | Mods | What it feels like | RAM for a small group |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Horror Reborn | Fabric 1.21.8 | About 40 | Ambient Fabric horror with multiplayer support, still in early development | 4 to 6 GB |
| Horror OneBlock | NeoForge 1.21.1 | About 40 | OneBlock survival with horror mobs, guns and Create automation | 4 to 6 GB |
| Beta Decay | NeoForge 1.21.1 | 200+ | Psychological horror on a Beta-style world that slowly corrupts | 10 GB or more |
Tell your players the exact pack version before they join, since the client and server have to match.
A Paper server with event plugins runs well on 2 GB for a small group, and 4 GB once you pass about 20 players or run mob waves and bosses. Modpacks need more: 4 to 6 GB for a light pack of around 40 mods, 10 GB or more for 200+ mods, and more again as the group grows. A few habits keep event night smooth:
/chunky spawn, /chunky radius 1000 and /chunky start the day before, so nobody waits on new chunks mid-event.maxAlive to your group, and space out Halloween Plugin's scares with /halloween set <event> <min> <max>.simulation-distance a step or two below view-distance in server.properties keeps far-off mobs from ticking while players still see the terrain./spark profiler start and read the report. Our lag guide walks through it.Everything above runs on a BruceNode Minecraft server, and most of it is a few clicks:

Halloween offer: starting a server for the event? Through October 31, new customers get 30% off the first month of a monthly plan with code SPOOKY30. Grab your Minecraft server and lock it in before Halloween night.
Not if you use plugins or datapacks on Paper. Players join on a normal client, and a server resource pack downloads when they connect. With a modpack, everyone installs the same pack in their launcher.
On October 31 in Java Edition. Zombies, skeletons and related mobs have about a one in four chance to spawn with a carved pumpkin or jack o'lantern on their heads, and the pumpkins never drop.
Yes with plugins, datapacks and resource packs, since they all add to the world you already have. A modpack lets you keep it or start fresh, but a world saved on a newer version will not open on an older modpack, so most horror packs play best on a fresh world.
The best Halloween events are simple: something to find, something to fight, something to build and something to trade. Pick plugins if you want everyone in on a normal client, or a horror modpack if your group wants real scares, and set it up a day early so event night is pure fun. Ready to host it? Minecraft hosting on BruceNode gets your server running in about a minute, with one-click modpacks and plugins.
